Family is important. They provide you with shelter, love, and support. Sometimes, children and animals are not accepted by their families, and they need help if they are to survive. Dale, a takin (aka cattle chamois or gnu goat), was born at the Cincinnati Zoo and rejected by his mother.
The zoo staff had seen babies be rejected before and knew how to handle it, but they were concerned about how Dale would react to not being accepted by his mother.
Takins are herd animals too, and Dale’s natural instinct was to seek out companionship – life would be almost too hard to handle if he was all alone.
In walks Blakely, a dog that had quite a reputation at the zoo.
Blakely had been living at the zoo and spent most of his day playing with the young animals. He is like a morale officer, keeping everyone happy – basically an exotic animal babysitter!
