You have undoubtedly have heard of Friar Tuck (the fictional character that was a companion to Robin Hood) – but what about a Friar dog? No? Me either – read on! St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals. The Franciscan monastery of Cochabamba, Bolivia is living up to their namesake. The monastery recently announced that they had taken in a puppy named Carmelo.
Carmelo has been given a more formal title befitting a dog of his ‘position’ he is known as Friar Bigotón (which is Spanish for “mustache”)! The new friar also has his own Franciscan habit to wear! Isn’t he adorable?!
Carmelo had been a stray before he found his home at the monastery. Friar Jorge Fernandez says that the pup’s life is carefree now and that he loves to run and play! All of the brothers just love him. When Carmelo isn’t running and playing, he loves to watch the fish!
