The most heartbreaking thing is to see an animal starving. What is worse is when people abandon an animal in a place where the animal has no way to get food. For Pete’s sake, if you have an animal you don’t want, give it to an animal shelter – don’t let it die a slow and painful death.
In Austin, Texas, a dog was found in a crate. The people who saw the dog thought it was dead. You could see all the dog’s bone sticking out of its skin and it was covered in feces.
When The Austin Police Department’s Animal Cruelty Division arrived on the scene, they realized that the dog was still alive. She was taken to the Austin Animal Center for emergency treatment.
The dog was only a puppy. Elizabeth Mancera, a vet tech, said the dog was cold and wet – her body temperature was so low that it didn’t register on thermometers.
The dog was named Sophie. Elizabeth talked to Sophie during those first few hours, just to let her know that she was safe now. It took several hours, but Elizabeth was able to get Sophie’s temperature to start climbing.
