Not all puppies begin life in a loving home with kids to play with and patient humans to train them.
An adorable puppy was recently abandoned at a high-kill shelter, unable to walk and with bloodshot eyes.
These injuries were highly indicative of some type of animal cruelty.
The shelter immediately contacted Rescue Dogs Rock NYC for help in saving this sweet little pup, aptly named Buddy.
The staff at Rescue Dogs Rock NYC were devastated to hear Buddy’s story and wanted to give him the best chance for a long life full of love.
They immediately arranged for Buddy to be transported to Dallas Specialty Hospital for a thorough examination.
X-rays revealed horrific damage to both of Buddy’s back legs.
Both of Buddy’s tibias were fractured in what the orthopedic surgeon described as the worst broken bones he’d ever seen in a puppy.
Veterinarians operated on Buddy for five hours to fix his broken legs.
They placed external hardware called an “external fixator” on Buddy’s left leg, and surgically implanted two plates and five pins in Buddy’s right leg.
The veterinarians are hopeful that this hardware will help Buddy’s bones heal correctly so that he can run and play again someday.
For right now, Buddy still has a long recovery ahead of him.
The external fixator has to remain in place for eight weeks, while the pins have to stay in for three months.
Buddy must also stay in a confined area to restrict his movement and take strong medication for pain.
Buddy will also need physical therapy after the bones have healed.
Despite his tragic start to life, Buddy is a lucky dog.
A rescue gave him a second chance, an angel donor offered to help cover the $5000 surgery plus therapy costs, and a caring family is providing foster care for him during his recovery.
Buddy’s tail still wags unconditionally, and eventually, he’ll be ready to find a home where he can live up to his name.
