Debby Murtagh, the director of research and community outreach for the Canadian Horse Defense Coalition (CHDC) claims that Japan has to rely on the imported horses to meet the consumer demand for basashi.
The CDHC is working to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption. There are laws to protect animals, but they go unenforced.
Ewa Demianowicz, the campaign manager for Humane Society International, said that if all the laws to protect the horses were followed, the industry wouldn’t be as lucrative as it is. Horrifying and unacceptable.

If we can raise enough awareness, something could be done to protect the lives and dignity of these beautiful animals.
Please spread the word about this practice.
