After an African rock python killed and ate a calf in Nigeria, it was hunted down and killed. But, the snake that was killed wasn’t guilty of eating a calf. True, the snake was bulging and may have looked really guilty – but it was actually full of eggs, not dead calf! The locals consider snake eggs a delicacy, so all the eggs were removed and eaten.
Not many local people expressed sympathy for the death of the innocent snake. Imagine how dangerous the area would have been if those eggs would have been allowed to hatch! The African rock python eats monitor lizards, antelopes, monkeys, and large rodents.
They are not venomous but kill by constriction. They coil their bodies around their prey and tighten the coils more each time the victim breathes out. Death is the result of cardiac arrest.
