If you could pick one word to describe the dog you see in this picture, what would it be? I would choose the word – miserable. This is Violet, she and five other dogs were found chained up on the same property in Miguel County, New Mexico in December 2016. Angela Stell, the founder, and director of NMDOG, said it was likely that Violet, 2, had probably been chained up her entire life.
In Miguel County, it is against the law to chain dogs up if the owner isn’t around. Thankfully, a woman called the Sheriff and Animal Welfare Coalition of Northeastern New Mexico for help.
The authorities were surprised to learn that the owner of the property and the dogs was in prison and hadn’t provided any care for the animals.
Once all the dogs were rescued, they were given a full medical exam. Happily, they no longer have those huge chains around their necks. Violet had been sunburned and had flystrike, which is when maggots have eaten away at an animal’s flesh. Violet is also very fearful.
