When Sarah Churman, born deaf, found out about a brand new implant technology that could help her to hear for the first time in her life, she understandably wanted to try it.
Having lived 34 years without sound, she’d never heard her husband’s voice or her children’s laughter.

But the implant wasn’t a cheap one. Being brand new to the market, it cost a whopping $30,000 per ear, meaning she would need $60,000 to pay for both implants.
It wasn’t a price tag she could even remotely afford. Both she and her husband discussed how they could make it work but came up empty.

That’s when Sarah’s mother-in-law stepped in and offered to help finance one of the implants.
However, the money involved would have to be from her retirement account.
But being a loving and caring relative, and considering Sarah the best daughter-in-law she could possibly hope for, it was a sacrifice she was willing to make.

It wasn’t long before Ellen DeGeneres heard this story and decided to invite Sarah onto her show.
Sarah was reluctant and hesitant at first, but though her nervousness showed on stage, she shared her tale with the world.
