A simple kiss. Well, it wasn’t really a simple kiss because the baby caught herpes meningitis from it and is now dead.
Mariana Sifrit was only 18-days old when she died on July 18 in Iowa. Her parents had exchanged their wedding vows only two hours before her death.
When Mariana was six-days old, she stopped eating and was hospitalized on July 7.
Doctors diagnosed the infant with meningitis HSV-1 – that is the same virus that causes cold sores.
Mariana’s father, Shane, said that soon after she was admitted, Mariana’s organs started to fail, and she stopped breathing.
Nicole, Mariana’s mother, kept family and friends updated on Facebook.
She also shared her heartbreak and reported that Mariana had no brain activity and that her heart was failing.
Mariana died three weeks later in Shane’s arms.
