Gu, a 28-year-old back packer is sharing her (rather nasty) story with the world.
Gu was backpacking in South America when she was bitten by an insect that was about the size of a peanut.
When she finally got home to Shanghai, the lump on her right leg where the bug bit here had split and opened up and was also very itchy.
Then to her horror, larvae crawled out of her leg! Most likely, Gu was bitten by a botfly, which goes by the scientific name, Dermatobia Hominis.
The insect that bit Gu left three marks on her leg and at the hospital, two other larvae were buried in her flesh.
The doctors removed the larvae and Gu is recovering.
If a botfly bites a human, the body heat triggers the eggs of a botfly to hatch into maggots. GROSS!
