In India, 2 in 100 babies born have birth defects according to The Indian Express. Dr. Anita Kar from the University of Pune said that heart defects are the most common birth abnormality. On Oct. 3, 2016, a two-headed baby boy was born in at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in India.
The doctors called the baby a “miracle,” and many people came to the pediatric unit to see the newborn. The baby weighed 5 pounds, 7 ounces and was the couple’s first child. After the birth, the mother was doing well, but the baby was having trouble breathing.
Dr. Jaiprakash said the surgery to separate the babies was too complicated. The baby had two sets of internal organs but shared one pair of arms and legs. Despite warnings, the parents took the baby home, and the child died 32 hours after his birth.
